Java Itinerary: The Perfect 3, 6 & 9 Days

Planning a Java itinerary means choosing between temples, volcanoes, or both — and how far across this long island you want to travel. The good news is that Java’s excellent trains and our private transport make it all easy to link. As a local Indonesian team that’s run Java trips since 2006, here are the three itineraries we recommend most.

For the bigger picture first, see our Java travel guide.

How Many Days Do You Need in Java?

It depends on your priorities. Three days covers one region — Yogyakarta’s temples or East Java’s volcanoes. Six days combines both, the most popular choice. Nine days allows a full west-to-east overland journey from Jakarta. Java is long, so factor in some travel time between regions.

Java Itinerary: 3 Days (Yogyakarta)

The cultural heart of Java, focused on its great temples.

Day 1. Arrive in Yogyakarta; explore the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari and Malioboro.

Day 2. Sunrise at Borobudur, then the Prambanan temples; optional Ramayana ballet.

Day 3. Mount Merapi jeep lava tour and a batik workshop, then departure.

This is our Yogyakarta tour.

Java Itinerary: 3 Days (Bromo & Ijen)

For adventurers who want the volcanoes.

Day 1. Arrive Surabaya; transfer to the Bromo caldera rim.

Day 2. Mount Bromo sunrise and sea of sand, then drive toward Ijen.

Day 3. Pre-dawn hike to Ijen’s blue fire, then finish near the Bali ferry.

This is our Bromo & Ijen tour.

Java Itinerary: 6 Days (Temples + Volcanoes)

The best of both, the most popular Java trip.

Days 1–2. Yogyakarta: city, Borobudur sunrise and Prambanan.

Day 3. Mount Merapi, then a scenic train east to the Bromo region.

Day 4. Mount Bromo sunrise, then drive toward Ijen.

Day 5. Ijen blue fire at dawn, then to Banyuwangi.

Day 6. Departure, or the short ferry to Bali.

This is our Java highlights tour.

Java Itinerary: 9 Days (Grand Overland)

The complete west-to-east journey.

Days 1–2. Jakarta and the Bandung tea highlands.

Days 3–5. Yogyakarta: temples, Merapi and culture.

Days 6–7. Train east; Mount Bromo sunrise.

Day 8. Ijen blue fire; to Banyuwangi.

Day 9. Departure, or ferry to Bali.

This is our Grand Java Overland tour.

Add Bali to Your Java Trip

Java’s eastern tip is just a short ferry from Bali, so the two combine perfectly. End your Java adventure with a Bali extension — browse our Bali tours.

Practical Tips

Use the trains for the long central-to-east legs — they’re comfortable and scenic. Pack warm layers for the pre-dawn volcano starts, and aim for the dry season (May–September) for the clearest sunrises. See our best time to visit Java guide.
