Where Is Java?

Java is the central island of Indonesia, home to the capital Jakarta and more than half the country’s population. For travellers, it divides into three areas: cultural Central Java around Yogyakarta, adventurous East Java with its volcanoes, and the gateway cities of Jakarta and Bandung in the west.

Yogyakarta: Java’s Cultural Heart

Borobudur & Prambanan

Two of the world’s great temples sit near Yogyakarta. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple on earth, a 9th-century UNESCO masterpiece best seen at sunrise. Mount Bromo & Ijen: Java’s Volcanoes

East Java is volcano country. Mount Bromo offers one of Indonesia’s most famous sunrises, its smoking cone rising from a vast sea of sand. Further east, the Ijen crater stuns visitors with its electric-blue fire — flames of burning sulphur visible before dawn — and a turquoise acid lake. How to Get Around Java

Java has one of Asia’s most pleasant railways, linking the cities and regions in comfort. Trains, private cars and short flights make getting around easy. The classic route runs west to east — Jakarta to Yogyakarta to the eastern volcanoes — ending near the Bali ferry. We arrange the whole chain.

How Long Do You Need?

Best Time to Visit
