Java highlights tour combines the island’s two great experiences — ancient temples and dramatic volcanoes — in one seamless journey. You’ll begin in cultural Yogyakarta with the sunrise at Borobudur and the temples of Prambanan, then travel east to watch the sun rise over Mount Bromo and hike to the blue fire of Ijen. It’s the perfect introduction to Java, from sacred stone to smoking craters.
As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we handle the trains, jeeps, guides and timing, so the whole journey flows effortlessly.
You get the best of Java in one trip. Watch sunrise over Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple, and explore Prambanan’s Hindu spires. Then journey east for the legendary Mount Bromo sunrise and the surreal electric-blue fire of Ijen crater. It ends near Banyuwangi, the ferry gateway to Bali. We travel privately, at your pace. Pair it with Bali or see our full Java destination page.
The trip flows from culture to adventure. The first half is relaxed temple-and-city touring in Yogyakarta; the second half is active volcano adventure with very early starts. A scenic train links the two regions. Expect long but rewarding travel days, simple lodgings near the volcanoes, and warm layers for the cold dawns. It’s a rich, varied journey through the heart of Java.

Sunrise at Borobudur, then the Hindu temples of Prambanan in the afternoon, with an optional Ramayana ballet. Overnight in Yogyakarta.
A morning Mount Merapi jeep lava tour, then a scenic train journey east toward the Bromo region. Transfer up to Cemoro Lawang on the caldera rim. Overnight near Bromo.
A pre-dawn jeep to the viewpoint for the Mount Bromo sunrise, then across the sea of sand to the crater. Afterwards, drive through scenic East Java toward Ijen. Overnight near Ijen.
A roughly 2am hike up Ijen to see the blue fire, crater lake and sulphur miners before dawn. Descend as the sun rises, then transfer to Banyuwangi. Overnight in Banyuwangi
A relaxed morning, then transfer for your onward journey — the short ferry to Bali, or a flight from Banyuwangi or Surabaya. End of services.
It has some long travel days and very early volcano starts, balanced by the relaxed Yogyakarta portion. It's active but achievable for reasonably fit travellers.
By a scenic, comfortable train for the long leg, plus private transport — far nicer than a long drive.
Moderate to challenging — a 2am start, a climb, and a steep descent toward the crater, with gas masks provided. Good fitness helps.
Best for families with older, active children who can manage the early starts and Ijen hike.
Yes — it ends right by the Bali ferry, so extending to Bali is easy. Just ask.
