Best Time to Visit Java: A Season-by-Season Guide
The best time to visit Java is the dry season, roughly May to September, when the skies are clearest for temple sunrises and the volcano trails of Bromo and Ijen are at their safest. But Java is a year-round destination, and understanding the seasons helps you plan well. As a local Indonesian team that’s run trips since 2006, here’s our honest guide.

Java Has Two Seasons
Java is tropical, warm and humid in the lowlands and cooler in the highlands and at the volcanoes. There are two seasons.
Dry season (around May to September). Clearer skies, reliable sunrises and safer volcano trails. The best time to visit.
Wet season (around October to April). Greener and quieter, but with heavier rain that can cloud the sunrises and make the volcano hikes tougher.
The Best Time to Visit Java Overall
For the clearest Borobudur and Bromo sunrises and the best Ijen conditions, aim for June to September. The weather is most reliable, and the volcano viewpoints are at their best. July and August are the busiest, so book ahead.
Best Time for the Volcanoes
Bromo and Ijen are far better in the dry season. Clear pre-dawn skies make the difference between a glorious sunrise and a grey blur, and dry trails are safer for the Ijen hike. In the wet months, the views are often hidden by cloud and trails can be slippery. Volcano access is also occasionally restricted by activity, which we always check.
Best Time for the Temples
Borobudur and Prambanan are beautiful year-round, but the dry-season sunrises are clearer and the days more comfortable. Early morning is best in any season for light and cooler air.
Avoiding the Crowds
The shoulder months of May and September offer a good balance of fine weather and thinner crowds. Early starts at the temples and volcanoes also help you beat both the heat and the crowds — and happen to coincide with the best light.
What to Pack
Bring warm layers for the cold pre-dawn volcano starts, light clothing for the lowland heat, modest dress for the temples, sturdy shoes, a rain layer, and sun protection.
