Gili Trawangan — affectionately known as “Gili T” — is the largest and liveliest of the three Gili Islands off Lombok’s northwest coast. Famous for its beautiful beaches, clear turquoise water and the only real nightlife in the Gilis, it’s the island with the most to offer above and below the surface, drawing everyone from backpackers to honeymooners and families.
Why Visit Gili Trawangan
Gili T has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants, dive schools and beach bars of the three islands, and after dark its southeast side comes alive with music and beach parties. But here’s the local secret: the island has two sides. Walk to the quieter north and west coasts and you’ll find calm, beautiful beaches and arguably the best sunset spots in the Gilis, with Bali’s Mount Agung on the horizon. Below the water, the reefs and turtle points make for superb snorkelling and diving. Like all the Gilis, it’s completely car-free — you get around on foot, by bicycle or by cidomo (horse cart). Comparing the islands? Our guide to which Gili is right for you breaks down all three.
Getting to Gili Trawangan & Things to Do
Gili Trawangan is reached by a short local boat from Lombok’s northwest coast, or directly by fast boat from Bali — see our Bali to Lombok guide. A guided Gili Islands snorkeling day trip is a great way to explore the reefs and turtle spots, and you can see how the island fits a wider trip in our things to do in Lombok guide.
