Gili Trawangan, Gili T to its friends — is the largest and liveliest of Lombok’s three Gili Islands, and for many travellers it’s love at first sight. Picture white-sand beaches ringing a car-free island, turquoise water full of sea turtles, beach bars swinging into life at sunset, and not a single motorbike anywhere. You get around on foot, by bicycle or by cidomo horse cart — and that’s exactly the charm.
Things to Do on Gili Trawangan
The water is the star. Snorkel straight off the beach and you’ll likely meet a turtle within minutes; the island is also Lombok’s diving hub, with schools for every level.
On land, cycle the island loop in about an hour and a half, queue up for a photo on the famous sunset swings, and finish the day with fresh seafood at the night market. After dark, Gili T has the best dining and nightlife of the three islands — lively, but never overwhelming.
Who Gili Trawangan Suits Best
Gili T is the island for travellers who want their paradise with a social pulse — friends’ trips, solo travellers, divers, and anyone who likes a sunset cocktail with their snorkeling. It’s bigger than its sisters, so quiet corners exist too: the north and west coasts are surprisingly peaceful. Prefer things calmer overall? Compare with laid-back Gili Air and sleepy Gili Meno, or read our guide to which Gili is right for you.
How to Get to Gili Trawangan
Fast boats run directly from Bali (around 1.5–2.5 hours) and from Lombok’s Bangsal harbour it’s a short 15–20 minute hop. We arrange all transfers as part of any trip, so the crossing is seamless. See the wider Gili Islands and Lombok pages for more.
Good to Know Getting around — car-free; walk, cycle or take a cidomo. The island loop is ~7 km. Best season — April to October for the calmest seas and clearest water. Money — several ATMs, but they can run dry in high season; carry some cash. Snorkeling — turtles are seen year-round right off the main beach.
