Gili Islands Travel Guide

Floating on a turquoise sea and fringed by white sand and coconut palm, the Gili islands just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia, become a tourist destination. From party people to couples looking for serenity, this archipelago of 3 tiny islands is where you will find all-night full-moon parties, vivid marine life, turquoise ocean, boutique hotels, and breathtaking sunsets. No cars or motorbikes are allowed so you can slow right down to a languid island pace. Each island has its own unique appeal. Gili Trawangan (aka Gili T) is the most cosmopolitan, with a raucous party scene and plenty of upscale dining and accommodation. Gili Air has an appealing mix of buzz and bliss, while little Gili Meno has the strongest local character.

Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are a group of three tiny islands located northwest of Lombok Island. Thanks to their natural beauty and tourism growth on these three islands, all three are recognized as the most popular tourist sites in Lombok. Because the Three Gilis are so popular with visitors, fast boats may carry you from Bali to Gili Trawangan.

Things to do in Gili T

If you like, you may also stay on these three Gilis. Gili Trawangan is the greatest spot to stay if you want exciting nightlife. Its vibrant nightlife makes Gili T a renowned tourist destination for those looking for a memorable night out. You may, however, stay on Gili Meno or Gili Air for a more peaceful vacation.

It doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy Gili T if partying is not your thing. The underwater scenery in this area is breathtaking. Diving or Snorkeling is definitely worth it. You may do diving in Turtle Heaven, Coral Fan Garden, Sunset Point, Biorocks, Bounty Wreck, and Shark Point. The underwater scenery is really spectacular.

If you already have a diving license, simply purchase a diving package to encounter turtles, parrotfish, lionfish, and whitefin reef sharks up close. Don’t worry, the diving spots on Gili T are suitable for all levels of divers. Meanwhile, those of you who do not have a diving license can participate in a fun dive by first undertaking two hours of diving exercises.

Diving is not your thing as well? Grab a mask and hop from the island to enjoy the underwater view by snorkeling, if you have bread with you the fish will happily join to extend the boarder of your memorable vacation.

Places to Stay in Gili T

You can easily find restaurants, rental facilities, tiny markets and stores, and of course places to stay. On Gili Trawangan, there are lots of accommodation options for every budget ranging from 4 stars hotels to a budget-friendly hotels that will open on request. All you have to do is show up on Gili T and ask around.

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is the most tranquil and the smallest of the Gili Islands. Families, couples, and honeymooners may unwind to the calming sound of the waves, abundant marine life, and a gentle tropical environment on this island. Gili Meno receives fewer visitors than Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, despite being the most centrally located of the two. Thanks to the isolation from Lombok and other outside influences on both sides, the island can preserve its peaceful and calm atmosphere all year. While Gili Meno has lots of peaceful activities, its magnificent beaches guarantee breathtaking vistas.

Things to do in Gili Meno

Gili Meno’s beaches offer a unique appeal that you won’t find on neighboring Gili T and Gili Air. Gili Meno is a beach lover’s heaven, with a long stretch of white powder sand and a little crowd to match, as well as pristine seas. Gili Meno’s beaches are primarily natural and undeveloped. Other features include the Turtle temporary shelter on Gili Meno’s northern shore, where young turtles are born and released into the open sea on a regular basis. The views of Mount Rinjani and Mount Agung add to the tranquillity of beachcombing on this charming island. Gili Meno is an excellent spot to stay for a night or two except you are a broken-hearted traveler that looking for a distraction.

Not only the beach, Gili Meno, like its neighbors Gili T and Gili Air, is well-known for hosting world-class snorkeling and diving spots. Snorkeling may be done from every beach on Gili Meno among colorful coral reefs that hide large lobsters and enormous manta rays. You may also visit Meno Bounty, a 30 m long sunken platform, or other diving sites such as Meno Wall and Mirkos/secret reef.

Since you love animals so much that swimming with turtles is not enough for you? Well, Gili Meno also has a bird park. This Bird Park has a variety of exotic birds, surprisingly enough, it also has other animals such as deer and crocodiles. Although it’s a not-so-wide park, it is more than adequate to be explored as an educational experience for your children.

Meno also has a brackish lake in the west part of the island. Sadly, it is only worth a visit during the rainy season unless you are interested in salt making.

Gili Air

Gili Air is the most tranquil and chill-purposed island. It’s like the combination of Gili T and Gili Meno. Well, you won’t find the partying atmosphere like in Gili T but the hotel options here are almost as varied as in Gili T and almost as tranquil as Gili Meno.

Things to do in Gili Air

Gili Air offers access to all activities on Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Snorkeling, swimming, diving, or simply relaxing on the beach are all options. Learning and testing local cuisine is also an option in Gili Air, many travelers choose to remain on the island for several weeks and learn how to cook. On the island, there are various shops that provide this class. These programs will teach you about Indonesian food and spices. The majority of the sessions take place before noon.

You can still find pool and beach parties or even fire dances at night on Gili Air but the bars here offer a more laid-back environment compared to the bars in Gili T.

Getting To Gili Islands

Access

Many people from all over the world visit this little island, which boasts magnificent beaches and coral reefs. Some travelers who desire to visit Gili Trawangan may not be aware of the roads, routes, or entry points that might be used to reach the island. From Lombok International Airport to the Gilis

For those of you who wish to visit Lombok and The Gilis, we recommend flying to Lombok Airport. You may take the Bypass route from Lombok Airport to Mataram City, then to Senggigi, and finally to Bangsal or Nare Bay from Senggigi. You will take a boat from this port to Gili Trawangan in approximately 20 minutes. From Bali

When you’re satisfied with your Bali trip, take a journey to Gili Trawangan, which departs from the island of Bali. From Lembar Harbor

Backpackers who normally arrive at Lembar Harbor can use public transportation from Lembar Harbor to Senggigi, and from Senggigi, take the Shuttle Bus to Bangsal Harbor or Nare Bay, where you will board a boat to Gili Trawangan.
