Bukit Lawang 4 day jungle trek takes you deeper into the Sumatran rainforest than the classic trip, far from the day-trippers. Over four days you’ll hike further into Gunung Leuser National Park, camp two nights in the wild, and search for orangutans in more remote forest. It’s a real expedition for fit, adventurous travellers.
Sumatra is one of only two places on earth where orangutans live in the wild. As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we handle the guides, permits and camps, so you can focus on the jungle.
More days mean deeper jungle and richer wildlife. Trek beyond the busy trails into quieter, wilder forest. Camp two nights by the river, fully immersed in the rainforest. Watch for wild orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons and hornbills with more time to find them. We travel responsibly, supporting the conservation that protects these great apes — see the Orangutan Foundation International. Prefer the classic trip? This is a demanding, rewarding expedition. You’ll trek for several hours each day through steep, hot, humid jungle, going deeper than the standard route. Nights are spent at simple riverside camps, with meals cooked over the fire and the river to swim in. The extra days bring solitude, deeper wilderness and more wildlife time. It’s challenging, and unforgettable.

Arrive at Medan's Kualanamu airport and transfer (around 3–4 hours) to Bukit Lawang. Settle into your guesthouse, meet your trekking team and enjoy an evening briefing by the river. Free time to rest before the expedition.
After breakfast, trek into Gunung Leuser, heading beyond the popular trails into quieter forest. Search for wild orangutans and other primates along the way, with a picnic lunch. Reach your first riverside jungle camp by afternoon, with dinner over the fire and a swim in the river.
A full day exploring deeper, wilder forest, where sightings feel truly earned and the jungle is at its most pristine. Watch for orangutans, gibbons and hornbills. Camp a second night by the river, far from the crowds.
Enjoy a final morning by the forest, then transfer back to Medan for your onward flight. End of services.

The dry season (roughly March–September). Heavy rain can make deep-jungle trekking harder and is best avoided for this expedition.
