This North Sumatra highlights tour brings together the region’s greatest hits in one comfortable week. You’ll meet orangutans in the Bukit Lawang jungle, explore the volcanic highlands of Berastagi, stand before the thundering Sipiso-Piso waterfall, and unwind at vast Lake Toba on Batak-cultured Samosir Island. It’s the complete North Sumatra journey, at a relaxed pace.
As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we handle every detail of this private trip, so you simply enjoy the road.
You see the very best of the region without rushing. Trek to find wild orangutans in Gunung Leuser. Explore Berastagi’s volcanoes, fruit markets and Karo Batak villages. Marvel at the 120-metre Sipiso-Piso waterfall. Then relax on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake on earth. We travel responsibly, supporting wildlife and local communities — see the Orangutan Foundation International. For wildlife only, see our Bukit Lawang orangutan trek, or read our Bukit Lawang trek guide.
The trip flows from jungle to highlands to lake. It opens with an active orangutan trek and a jungle-camp night, then eases into scenic drives, cool mountain air and relaxed days by the water. You’ll experience wildlife, dramatic landscapes and warm Batak culture. Accommodation is comfortable throughout. It’s North Sumatra’s highlights, beautifully paced.
