Bukit Lawang orangutan trek in 3 days leads you into the steaming rainforest of Sumatra to track wild orangutans on foot. Deep inside Gunung Leuser National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest — you’ll hike through hilly jungle to find orangutans in the canopy, camp beside a river, and float back to the village by tube. It’s a genuine active adventure for travellers who want to earn their sighting.

Sumatra is one of only two places on earth where orangutans live in the wild. As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we handle your guides, permits, jungle camp and transfers, so you can focus on the adventure.

Why Choose This Bukit Lawang Orangutan Trek

You meet orangutans the wild way — on foot, in their forest. Trek through Gunung Leuser with expert local guides who know the jungle intimately. Spot Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons and hornbills along the way. Camp overnight by a rushing river, with meals cooked over the fire. Then tube back down the Bohorok River for a thrilling finish. We travel responsibly, supporting the conservation that protects these great apes — learn more from the Orangutan Foundation International. Prefer a relaxed river cruise instead? See our Borneo orangutan tours, or compare the two in our Borneo vs Sumatra guide.

What to Expect

This is an active, immersive jungle trip. You’ll hike for several hours through hot, humid, hilly rainforest, with breaks to watch wildlife. The reward is the thrill of spotting a wild orangutan above you. Nights are spent at a simple riverside jungle camp, with your guides cooking fresh meals and the river to swim in. The final-day tubing ride back is pure fun. It’s challenging in places, but unforgettable.

Tour's Location

Q. How difficult is this Bukit Lawang orangutan trek?

Moderate to challenging. The jungle is hilly, hot and humid, with some steep, slippery sections. Reasonable fitness helps, and the pace can be adjusted to your group.

Q. Is it suitable for families with children?

Best for active families with children around 8 and older. For younger kids, we can arrange shorter half-day or day treks instead of the overnight.

Q. Are orangutan sightings guaranteed?

Sightings are very common, as semi-wild orangutans live in this area, but they're wild animals, so we can never promise. Your guides know where they're most often seen.

Q. Where do we sleep?

Night one in a riverside guesthouse in Bukit Lawang; night two at a simple jungle camp by the river, with shelter and bedding provided.

Q. What should I bring?

Trekking shoes with grip, quick-dry clothes, insect repellent, a light rain layer, a hat, sun protection and a dry bag for valuables.

Q. What's the best time to go?

The dry season (roughly March–September) gives the best trails. The forest is wetter and more slippery in the rainy months.
