Lombok with Kids: A Family Travel Guide

Travelling to Lombok with kids is easier — and more rewarding — than many parents expect. This is a calm, friendly, naturally beautiful island where the beaches are gentle, the locals adore children, and the days can be as active or as lazy as your family needs. As a local team that’s arranged family trips here since 2006, here’s our honest guide to making Lombok work brilliantly for families, from the best things to do to the practical tips that keep everyone happy.

Is Lombok Good for Kids or Families?

In a word, yes. Lombok is quieter and less hectic than Bali, with calm bays for little swimmers, short and gentle nature outings, and a warm Sasak culture where children are genuinely welcomed everywhere you go. Distances are manageable when you travel with a private guide, and there’s an easy mix of adventure and downtime — enough to keep older kids excited and younger ones content. It’s a place where a family can do a lot, or very little, and feel relaxed either way.

Best Things to Do in Lombok with Kids

Gentle Gili Islands snorkelling

The car-free Gili Islands are a family dream — no traffic, clear shallow water, and sea turtles you can spot from the surface. Stick to the calm spots and younger children can snorkel happily with a parent close by. Our Gili Islands snorkeling day trip visits the best of them, and for even calmer, shallower lagoons, the quieter Gili Nanggu trip off the southwest coast is ideal for little swimmers. Not sure which island suits your family? Our guide to choosing a Gili helps.

Waterfalls and easy jungle walks

The north Lombok waterfalls — Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep — make a fun, cooling adventure with a short walk in. The trail has a few uneven bits and a shallow river crossing, so they suit families with school-age children and up. See our north Lombok waterfall day trip.

Rice fields, villages and culture

A gentle guided walk through the Tetebatu rice terraces is easy underfoot and full of things kids love — water buffalo, monkeys at the forest edge, and farmers happy to wave hello. See our rice field walking tour. A visit to a traditional Sasak village, like those on our villages and tradition day trip, is surprisingly engaging for children — weaving, traditional houses and a real cultural welcome.

The calm southern beaches

Lombok’s south coast has wide, gentle bays like Tanjung Aan and Mawun, with soft sand and shallow water perfect for building castles and paddling. They’re the ideal downtime counterweight to the more active days.

A little adventure for older kids

Families with teens who want a thrill can add a river rafting day — exciting without being extreme — or an easy walk in the cool Sembalun foothills for volcano views.

What to Skip (or Save for Later)

The one thing we gently steer families away from is the full multi-day Mount Rinjani trek. It’s a serious, high-altitude climb in cold conditions — wonderful for older teens and adults who are properly prepared, but too demanding for younger children. Save the summit for a future trip, and enjoy the mountain’s gentler foothills instead. (If you do have trek-ready teens, our Mount Rinjani trekking guide has the details.)

Practical Tips for Families in Lombok

  • Travel with a private driver-guide. This is the single biggest stress-reducer — you set the pace, fit nap and snack stops around your family, and skip the navigation and bargaining. It’s how we run almost all our family trips.
  • Sun and heat. It’s tropical and strong; pack reef-safe sunscreen, hats and rash vests, and plan beach and water time for mornings and late afternoons.
  • Water and food. Drink bottled or filtered water, and stick to busy, well-reviewed restaurants and freshly cooked food to keep tummies happy.
  • Mosquitoes. Bring repellent and consider light long sleeves at dusk.
  • Supervise around water. Beaches and snorkel spots are gentle but currents exist — keep little ones close and use life vests where offered.
  • Pack a small kit. Basic children’s medicine, plasters and any essentials are easier brought than found; pharmacies are in the main towns but choice is limited in rural areas.
  • Cash. Carry enough, especially for the Gili Islands and rural spots where ATMs are scarce.

Best Time to Visit Lombok with Kids

The dry season (around April–October) is the easiest for families — reliable sunshine for beaches and snorkelling, and calmer seas for boat trips. The shoulder months are lovely and quieter. The wet season (November–March) is green and peaceful with short afternoon showers, and still perfectly doable with a flexible plan. Calmer morning seas make boat crossings gentler for kids who are sensitive to motion.

How Long to Spend

For families, we suggest at least 5–7 days so you can balance active days with proper downtime — children (and parents) enjoy Lombok far more without a rushed schedule. Base yourself in one or two areas rather than moving constantly, and leave space in the plan for an unhurried beach afternoon.

Plan a Family Trip With a Local Team
