Bali with Kids: A Family Travel Guide

Travelling to Bali with kids is easier and more rewarding than many parents expect. The island is warm, welcoming and endlessly fun for children — think monkeys and elephants, gentle waterfalls, calm beaches and famous jungle swings — while parents enjoy the culture, food and easy logistics. As a local Indonesian team that’s arranged family trips since 2006, here’s our honest guide to making Bali work brilliantly for families.

Is Bali Good for Families?

In a word, yes. Balinese culture adores children, and you’ll feel that warmth everywhere you go. The island packs a huge variety of family-friendly activities into a small space, with plenty of calm beaches and pools for downtime. Distances are very manageable with a private driver, and there’s an easy mix of adventure and rest. It’s a place where families can do a lot, or very little, and feel relaxed either way.

Best Things to Do in Bali with Kids

Meet the animals

Kids love Bali’s wildlife. A safari or wildlife park lets them see elephants, big cats and tropical birds up close, with shows and gentle rides. The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is fun too — just hold tight to sunglasses and snacks, as the monkeys are cheeky.

Gentle waterfalls, rice terraces & swings

Bali’s nature is wonderfully kid-friendly. Easy-to-reach waterfalls like Tegenungan offer a cooling splash. The Tegallalang rice terraces are a fun walk, and the famous jungle swings make for unforgettable family photos (with secure harnesses and age limits).

Calm beaches & pools

For downtime, head to the gentle, shallow beaches of Sanur and Nusa Dua, perfect for younger swimmers. Most family resorts have great pools too — build in plenty of relaxed beach-and-pool time between activities.

Fun days out

A water park is always a hit with children, and there are several around the south. Older kids enjoy easy snorkelling trips, cooking classes and beginner surf lessons on the gentle south-coast waves.

Culture kids actually enjoy

Even culture can be family fun in Bali. The dramatic Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu captivates children, and traditional craft villages let them try their hand at making things.

Easy island day trips

A boat trip to nearby Nusa Lembongan gives families calm snorkelling, clear water and beach time, without a long journey.

We build the best of these into our Bali Family Holiday Tour — a private, gentle-paced trip designed around children.

What to Skip or Save for Later

A few things are best left for when children are older: the strenuous pre-dawn Mount Batur volcano trek, long temple-heavy days, and the busy nightlife areas. Keep the pace gentle and the days varied, and everyone stays happy.

Where to Stay With Kids

Sanur is calm, flat and family-friendly, with a gentle beach and easy walking. Nusa Dua has resort comforts and safe, shallow water. Ubud suits families who want greenery, culture and nature, with lovely pool villas. We often combine a few nights in Ubud with a few by the beach.

Practical Tips for Families in Bali

  • Travel with a private driver-guide. This is the single biggest stress-reducer — you set the pace and fit naps and snacks around your family. It’s how we run our family trips.
  • Sun and heat. It’s strong and tropical; pack reef-safe sunscreen, hats and rash vests, and plan beach time for mornings and late afternoons.
  • Water and food. Drink bottled or filtered water, and stick to busy, well-reviewed restaurants and freshly cooked food.
  • Mosquitoes. Use repellent and consider light long sleeves at dusk.
  • Supervise around water. Beaches and pools are gentle but always keep little ones close, and use life vests where offered.
  • Bring a small kit. Children’s medicine, plasters and essentials are easier brought than found; pharmacies are in the main towns.
  • Car seats and family rooms can be arranged on request — just tell us your children’s ages.

Best Time to Visit Bali With Kids

The dry season (around April to October) is easiest for families, with reliable sunshine and calm seas for boat trips. The shoulder months are lovely and quieter. The wet season is still doable with a flexible plan, as showers tend to come in short afternoon bursts. For more, see our best time to visit Bali guide. Heading to Lombok too?
