Lombok is the island travellers fall for once they’ve stopped rushing. Just east of Bali, it trades the crowds for empty beaches, waterfalls you can still hear yourself think beside, a towering volcano, and Sasak villages where the welcome is genuine. We’ve been showing visitors around this island since 2006, and the question we hear most from couples and families planning their first trip is simple: what are the best things to do in Lombok, and how do you fit them together?
This is our honest local answer — the experiences worth your time, who each one suits, and how to weave them into a relaxed week rather than a checklist sprint.
1. Snorkel the Gili Islands
If you do one thing in Lombok, make it the Gilis. These three tiny car-free islands off the northwest coast — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — sit in water so clear you’ll spot sea turtles from the surface. There are no motorbikes and no traffic; you get around by bicycle or horse cart, which families with children love and couples find quietly romantic.
A guided day trip is the easiest way to see the best snorkel spots without the logistics. Our Gili Islands snorkeling day trip hops between the three islands and the turtle points, with time to relax on the sand between swims. If you’d rather escape the busier spots entirely, the quieter southwestern islands on our Gili Nanggu snorkeling trip feel like your own private lagoon — often the better choice for families with younger swimmers.
Best for: everyone. Gentle, beautiful, and the highlight of most first trips.
2. Chase the North Lombok Waterfalls
In the foothills of Mount Rinjani, two of Indonesia’s prettiest waterfalls sit a short walk apart: Sendang Gile and the taller, wilder Tiu Kelep. The walk in winds through jungle and rice terraces, and the reward is standing under cool mountain spray after the tropical heat — the kind of moment couples remember and kids talk about for weeks.
Our North Lombok waterfall day trip handles the drive, the local guide and the trail, so you can simply enjoy it. The path has a few uneven sections and one shallow river crossing, which most reasonably active families manage easily, though it’s worth a mention if anyone in your group prefers a flatter day.
Best for: active couples and families with school-age children and up.
3. See Mount Rinjani — Trek It or Just Admire It
Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, and its crater lake is one of the most spectacular sights in the country. There are really two ways to experience it, and they suit very different travellers.
For experienced hikers, a multi-day trek to the crater rim or summit is a genuine bucket-list adventure. We run these as private trips with certified guides and full camping support — see the 2-day Senaru crater rim trek for the most popular option, or the summit treks if you’re chasing the very top. The trekking season generally runs from around April to December, and the national park can close at short notice for weather or safety, so it’s always worth checking timing with us before you commit.
If a full trek isn’t for you — and for most couples and families it isn’t — you don’t have to miss out. The Sembalun valley on Rinjani’s eastern side offers gentle foothill walks, cool air, strawberry farms and jaw-dropping views over the volcano without the overnight climb. It’s one of our favourite half-day additions for travellers who want the mountain scenery without the summit.
Best for: serious hikers (the trek); everyone else (the Sembalun foothills).
4. Meet the Sasak: Villages, Weaving & Tradition
Lombok’s heart is its people. The indigenous Sasak have their own language, architecture and crafts, and a visit to a traditional village is the experience guests tell us stayed with them most. You’ll see thatched rice barns, watch women weave intricate songket cloth on backstrap looms, and get a warm, unhurried welcome that’s a world away from a tourist show.
Our Lombok villages, tradition and waterfall day trip combines this cultural side with countryside scenery in one relaxed day — a lovely choice for families, because children are usually fascinated, and for couples who want to understand the island rather than just photograph it.
Best for: curious travellers of every age; especially rewarding for families.
5. Walk the Rice Fields & Countryside
Some of the best things to do in Lombok cost nothing more than a gentle pace. A guided walk through the rice terraces and farming villages of the Tetebatu highlands is slow travel at its finest — emerald paddies, water buffalo, monkeys in the forest fringe, and farmers happy to wave you through. Our Lombok rice field walking tour is easy underfoot and works beautifully for couples wanting a quiet morning or families with younger children who can’t manage longer treks.
Best for: gentle pace seekers, photographers, families with little ones.
6. Get Active: Rafting, Surfing & Cycling
For travellers who like a bit of adrenaline between the beach days, Lombok delivers.
- River rafting through jungle and past waterfalls is exciting without being extreme — our Lombok rafting day trip suits confident families and active couples.
- Surfing is superb here, and the south coast has gentle beginner waves. Our Lombok surf lesson and sightseeing day pairs a lesson with a look at the coastline — a great first-timer’s introduction.
- Cycling through villages and out to a hidden waterfall, as on our Lombok biking and Gangga waterfall adventure, is a fun, local-feeling way to cover ground.
Best for: active couples and families with teens.
7. Relax on the Southern Beaches
The south of Lombok is where the postcard beaches live. Around Kuta Lombok (a calmer cousin of Bali’s Kuta), you’ll find sweeping bays like Tanjung Aan with its famous “peppercorn” sand, dramatic headlands for sunset, and the gentle, shallow water that makes families breathe easier. It’s the perfect counterweight to a few active days — a place to do very little, very happily.
Best for: honeymooners, beach lovers, families wanting downtime.
8. Combine Lombok with Bali — or Beyond
Many of our guests come for Bali and discover Lombok; just as many do it the other way around. The two islands pair perfectly, and a fast boat connects them in a few hours. If you have ten days or more, combining them gives you the best of both — Bali’s temples and arts, Lombok’s nature and calm. Our Bali and Lombok trip is built exactly for this, and from Lombok it’s also an easy hop east to Komodo and Flores if you’re dreaming bigger.
Best for: travellers with 10+ days who want variety.
Planning Your Lombok Trip
When to go. Lombok’s dry season — roughly April to October — is the most reliable for beaches, snorkelling and trekking. The shoulder months still shine and bring fewer visitors. The wet season (November to March) is greener and quieter, with short afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain.
How long to stay. Three to four days lets you taste the Gilis and a waterfall or village day. A week is the sweet spot — enough for the islands, the north, some culture and real beach time without rushing. Ten days lets you fold in Bali or Rinjani comfortably.
Lombok with kids. This is a wonderfully family-friendly island. Stick to the gentle snorkel spots, the rice-field and village walks, the southern beaches and the Sembalun foothills, and save the big Rinjani trek for a future trip. Private transport with a local guide takes the stress out of travelling with children, which is how we arrange most family days.
