Wae Rebo trek leads you to one of Indonesia’s most magical hidden places — a tiny traditional village set high above the clouds on Flores. Over three days you’ll drive through the Manggarai highlands, hike up through jungle to the cone-roofed houses of Wae Rebo, and spend a night with its welcoming community. It’s an unforgettable cultural adventure off the tourist trail.
Flores is a land of volcanoes, villages and deep tradition. As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we arrange every detail of this private journey.
You reach a genuinely special place, the right way. Trek up to Wae Rebo, a village of seven cone-roofed Mbaru Niang houses that won a UNESCO heritage award. Sleep in a traditional house and share meals with the Manggarai people. See the famous Lingko spider-web rice fields near Ruteng. We travel responsibly, supporting the village community directly. Pair it with our Komodo tours for dragons and islands, or explore the full Flores destination page.
This is a cultural trek, not a beach trip. You’ll drive winding mountain roads, then hike around three hours uphill through forest to reach Wae Rebo. The reward is profound — a night in a living traditional village, far from the modern world. The pace is moderate and the welcome is warm. Bring an open heart and a light pack.

Depart Labuan Bajo and drive into the cool Manggarai highlands. Stop at Cancar to see the remarkable Lingko spider-web rice fields from a hilltop viewpoint. Continue to the highland town of Ruteng, soaking up the mountain scenery along the way. Overnight in Ruteng.
Drive to the trailhead village of Denge, then trek around three hours uphill through forest to reach Wae Rebo, emerging to the sight of seven cone-roofed houses ringed by mist and mountains. Take part in a traditional welcome ceremony, meet the community, and spend the afternoon learning about village life. Overnight in a traditional Mbaru Niang house.
Wake to the village in the morning light, one of Flores's most magical moments. After breakfast, trek back down to Denge and drive back to Labuan Bajo (a long but scenic day). End of services.
Moderate. It's around a 3-hour uphill hike through forest. Reasonable fitness helps; the pace can be adjusted, and porters can carry bags.
Simple and authentic — you sleep in a communal traditional house, share local meals, and experience genuine Manggarai hospitality. It's basic but unforgettable.
Best for families with children around 8+ who can manage the hike. The cultural experience is wonderful for older kids.
es. Many travellers pair Wae Rebo with a Komodo boat trip from Labuan Bajo. Just ask and we'll plan it.
The dry season (April–October) is best for trekking and clear highland views.
