This Tanjung Puting orangutan tour takes you into the heart of Borneo to meet wild orangutans in one of the best places on earth to see them. Over three unforgettable days, you’ll cruise the Sekonyer River aboard a private traditional klotok houseboat. You’ll watch orangutans swing into the famous feeding stations. And you’ll sleep on deck under the stars, to the sounds of the jungle.
It’s a relaxed, magical wildlife adventure — easy enough for families, yet wild enough to feel like a real expedition. As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we arrange every detail so you simply step aboard and enjoy.
You meet orangutans up close, the right way. Visit all three feeding camps, including the legendary Camp Leakey, founded by Dr. Biruté Galdikas. Cruise past proboscis monkeys, hornbills and fireflies. Your private klotok comes with crew, guide and cook, so the experience is comfortable and unhurried. We travel responsibly, supporting the conservation work that protects these great apes — learn more from the Orangutan Foundation International. Pair this trip with our Sumatra orangutan trek to see both species, or explore more on our Borneo destination page.
Your days flow with the river and the wildlife. Mornings and afternoons bring camp visits and gentle jungle walks. Between them, you cruise, watch the banks for monkeys, and relax on deck. Meals are freshly cooked on board by your crew. Nights are spent on a mattress under a mosquito net, with the jungle as your soundtrack. The pace is easy and the rewards are extraordinary.

Arrive at Pangkalan Bun airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you to Kumai port (about 15 minutes). Board your private klotok and begin cruising up the Sekonyer River into Tanjung Puting National Park. In the afternoon, visit the Tanjung Harapan feeding camp for your first orangutan encounter. As the light fades, watch for proboscis monkeys along the banks and fireflies in the trees. Dinner is cooked fresh on board; sleep on the open deck under a mosquito net.
Wake to the sounds of the jungle and breakfast on the boat. Cruise to the Pondok Tanggui feeding camp for the morning feeding, then enjoy a gentle guided jungle walk among rich rainforest flora. Continue upriver to the legendary Camp Leakey — the historic research centre founded by Dr. Biruté Galdikas — for the afternoon feeding and a forest trail where semi-wild orangutans often roam free. Return to your klotok for another peaceful night on the river.
Enjoy a final, early morning of birdwatching and wildlife spotting as your klotok cruises gently back down the river to Kumai. Transfer to Pangkalan Bun airport for your onward flight. End of services.
It's easy. Tanjung Puting is flat — mostly boardwalks and gentle jungle paths — with relaxed cruising in between. It suits most ages and fitness levels.
Yes. Families are very welcome. Children love the orangutans, and the pace is gentle. Younger children can stay on the boat with the crew during longer walks.
The upper deck becomes a comfortable sleeping area at night, with a mattress, bedding and a mosquito net, under the boat's roof.
Often within a few metres at the feeding camps. For everyone's safety and the animals' wellbeing, you never touch or feed them, and your guide manages a safe distance.
Year round, though the drier months (roughly April–October) are most comfortable. Bring a light rain layer any time, as tropical showers are part of the experience.
By a short flight from Java — usually Jakarta, Surabaya or Semarang. We can advise on connections and arrange transfers.
