Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba tour pairs Sumatra’s greatest wildlife with its most beautiful landscape. Over five days you’ll trek into the jungle to find wild orangutans, then journey to Lake Toba — the vast volcanic lake at the heart of Batak culture. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and culture for travellers who want to see the real North Sumatra.
As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we arrange every detail, from the jungle camp to the lakeside villages.
You experience two unforgettable sides of Sumatra. Trek through Gunung Leuser to meet wild orangutans and jungle wildlife. Then unwind at Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake on earth, and explore Samosir Island, home of the Batak people. Discover traditional villages, music and warm hospitality. We travel responsibly, supporting both wildlife and local communities — see the Orangutan Foundation International. Want wildlife only? See our 3-day Bukit Lawang trek, or read our Bukit Lawang trek guide.
The first half is an active jungle trek with a night at a riverside camp. The second half is scenic and cultural — an overland journey through the highlands to Lake Toba, a ferry to Samosir Island, and time among the Batak villages and lake views. The pace eases as the trip goes on, ending in relaxation by the water. It’s a rich, varied Sumatra journey.
