Planning a Lombok itinerary is the fun part of any trip — but it’s also where most travellers get stuck, because the island packs in so much: car-free islands, jungle waterfalls, an active volcano, Sasak villages and some of Indonesia’s quietest beaches. How do you fit it together without spending your holiday in the back of a car?
We’ve arranged trips on this island since 2006, and below are the three itineraries we recommend most often, depending on how long you have. Each is built for couples and families who want a relaxed pace — a real holiday, not a route march — with day-by-day suggestions you can follow as-is or mix and match. For a deeper look at any single experience, see our guide to the best things to do in Lombok.
How Many Days Do You Need in Lombok?
Honestly? More than you think. Here’s the quick version:
- 5 days — enough for the island’s greatest hits: the Gili Islands, a waterfall day and some beach time.
- 7 days — the sweet spot. You add culture, countryside and a more relaxed rhythm without rushing.
- 10 days — room to fold in either Bali or a Mount Rinjani trek, turning a Lombok trip into a full Indonesia adventure.
Whatever you choose, we suggest basing yourself in one or two areas rather than changing hotels every night — less packing, more holiday.
Lombok Itinerary: 5 Days
The essentials, at an easy pace. Perfect for a first visit or a relaxed long break.
Day 1 — Arrival & Senggigi. Land at Lombok International Airport, settle into the Senggigi area, and ease in with a sunset on the beach and a welcome dinner. No agenda — just arrive.
Day 2 — Gili Islands snorkelling. The island highlight. Hop between the three Gilis, snorkel the turtle points, and relax on the sand. Our Gili Islands snorkeling day trip handles the boats and the best spots for you.
Day 3 — North Lombok waterfalls. Head into Rinjani’s green foothills for the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls — jungle, fresh mountain air and a cool swim. See our north Lombok waterfall day trip.
Day 4 — Southern beaches. Drive south to Kuta Lombok for the postcard bays — Tanjung Aan, Mawun — and a slower beach day. Sunset from a clifftop to finish.
Day 5 — Departure. A free morning for last swims or souvenirs before your flight out.
Lombok Itinerary: 7 Days
Our most-recommended Lombok itinerary. Everything in the 5-day plan, plus culture and countryside — and time to actually breathe.
Day 1 — Arrival & Senggigi. Settle in, beach sunset, welcome dinner.
Day 2 — Gili Islands snorkelling. Island-hopping and turtles, as above.
Day 3 — Sasak culture & villages. Meet the island’s indigenous heart: traditional villages, songket weaving, and a warm local welcome. Our Lombok villages, tradition and waterfall day trip blends culture with scenery beautifully.
Day 4 — North waterfalls & foothills. The Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, with the option to continue to the cool Sembalun valley for volcano views without the climb.
Day 5 — Rice fields & slow countryside. A gentle guided walk through the Tetebatu rice terraces — emerald paddies, water buffalo, monkeys at the forest edge. See our Lombok rice field walking tour. Active families might swap in a river rafting day instead.
Day 6 — Southern beaches. Kuta Lombok and its quiet bays — a proper unwind day.
Day 7 — Departure. Free morning, then home.
Lombok Itinerary: 10 Days
With ten days you can keep the relaxed Lombok week above and add a bigger adventure. Two ways to do it:
Option A — Lombok + Bali (best for couples & families)
Follow the 7-day plan, then on Days 8–10 take the fast boat to Bali for temples, rice terraces and Ubud’s arts before flying home from Denpasar. It’s the classic two-island Indonesia trip, and we package it end to end as the Bali and Lombok trip so the transfers and logistics are sorted for you.
Option B — Lombok + Mount Rinjani (best for active adventurers)
Trade a couple of the gentler days for a guided trek up Indonesia’s second-highest volcano — the crater lake, hot springs and a sunrise summit. Read our full Mount Rinjani trekking guide first, then choose your route from our Rinjani trekking trips. Build in a rest day afterward — your legs will thank you.
Lombok with Kids: Easy Tweaks
This is a wonderfully family-friendly island; you just soften the edges. Keep the gentle Gili snorkel spots, the rice-field and village walks and the calm southern beaches; skip the full Rinjani trek in favour of the easy Sembalun foothills; and travel with a private guide and vehicle so nap times and snack stops fit your family, not a fixed schedule. Most of our family trips run exactly this way.
Best Time to Visit & Practical Tips
When to go. Lombok’s dry season — roughly April to October — is ideal for beaches, snorkelling and trekking. The shoulder months stay lovely and quieter. The wet season (November to March) is green and peaceful, with short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain.
Getting around. Distances look small but mountain roads are slow. A private driver-guide is the stress-free way to follow any of these itineraries — and lets you adjust on the fly.
Pace. Resist over-packing the days. The travellers who love Lombok most are the ones who leave space in the plan for a long lunch and an unplanned beach.
