Kelimutu Guide: The Tri-Coloured Crater Lakes of Flores
Kelimutu is one of Indonesia’s most surreal natural wonders — a volcano on Flores crowned by three crater lakes that mysteriously change colour. Watching the sun rise over them, as mist drifts off water that may be turquoise, green or black, is an experience travellers never forget. As a local Indonesian team that’s guided trips since 2006, here’s our complete guide to visiting Kelimutu.

What Is Kelimutu?
Kelimutu is a volcano in central Flores, rising to around 1,640 metres within Kelimutu National Park. Its fame comes from the three separate crater lakes at its summit, each a different colour, sitting side by side. It’s one of the few places on earth where you can see colour-changing lakes like these, and it draws travellers from around the world.
Why Do the Lakes Change Colour?
The lakes shift between shades of turquoise, green, blue, black, brown and even red over months and years. Scientists attribute this to volcanic activity beneath the surface — dissolved minerals and gases reacting with the water and changing its chemistry. The colours are never fully predictable, which is part of the magic.
The Legend of the Souls
To the local Lio people, Kelimutu is sacred. They believe the lakes are the resting place of departed souls. One lake is said to hold the souls of the young, another of the old, and a third of those who lived troubled lives. This spiritual meaning adds a quiet reverence to any visit.
Seeing the Kelimutu Sunrise
The classic way to experience Kelimutu is at dawn. You leave the village of Moni before sunrise, drive to the park, and walk a short path to the viewpoint. As the sun comes up, the lakes emerge from the dark and the colours reveal themselves — a genuinely magical moment. Bring a warm layer, as the summit is cool before dawn.
Where to Stay: Moni
The base for Kelimutu is Moni, a small village at the foot of the mountain, around 15 kilometres away. It has simple guesthouses and lodges, and an early start from here makes the sunrise easy to reach. Most overland Flores tours overnight in Moni before the climb.
How to Visit Kelimutu
Kelimutu sits roughly in central-eastern Flores, usually visited as part of an overland crossing of the island. Many travellers reach it from the west via Bajawa, ending at Maumere or Ende. We include the Kelimutu sunrise on our Flores overland tour and our Grand Flores Overland tour.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, around April to October, gives the clearest dawn skies and the best chance of seeing the colours without cloud. In the wet season, the summit is often shrouded in mist at sunrise. See our best time to visit Flores guide.
Plan Your Kelimutu Trip
Standing above Kelimutu’s lakes at sunrise is one of Indonesia’s great travel moments. The overland journey to reach it is far easier with a local team handling the route and timing.
