Flores Itinerary: The Perfect 3, 5 & 7 Days Overland

Planning a Flores itinerary takes a little local know-how, because this is an island of long, winding roads and remote treasures rather than quick beach hops. The reward is one of Indonesia’s great overland adventures — cloud villages, crater lakes and ancient cultures. As a local Indonesian team that’s run Flores trips since 2006, here are the three itineraries we recommend most, depending on your time.

How Many Days Do You Need in Flores?

Flores is a journey, so give it time. Three days lets you reach one icon, like Wae Rebo. Five days allows the classic crossing to Kelimutu. Seven days lets you combine the cloud village, the villages and the lakes without rushing. Whatever you choose, expect scenic but long drives — that’s part of the adventure.

Flores Itinerary: 3 Days (Wae Rebo)

A short trip focused on Flores’s most magical village.

Day 1. Drive from Labuan Bajo into the highlands, stopping at the Lingko spider-web rice fields, to Ruteng.

Day 2. Trek up to the cloud village of Wae Rebo and stay overnight in a traditional house.

Day 3. Trek back down and return to Labuan Bajo.

This is the heart of our Wae Rebo trek.

Flores Itinerary: 5 Days (Kelimutu Crossing)

The classic west-to-east overland adventure.

Day 1. Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, via the Lingko rice fields.

Day 2. Ruteng to Bajawa, with waterfalls and an afternoon in the hot springs.

Day 3. The megalithic Ngada villages of Bena and Luba, then on to Moni.

Day 4. Kelimutu at sunrise for the tri-coloured lakes, then to Maumere.

Day 5. Departure from Maumere.

This is our Flores overland tour.

Flores Itinerary: 7 Days (Wae Rebo + Kelimutu)

The complete Flores, combining both icons.

Days 1–2. Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, then trek to Wae Rebo and overnight in the village.

Day 3. Trek down and drive to Bajawa, with the hot springs.

Day 4. The Ngada villages, then continue east.

Day 5. On to Moni, the base for Kelimutu.

Day 6. Kelimutu sunrise, then to Maumere.

Day 7. Departure.

This is our Grand Flores Overland tour.

Add Komodo to Your Flores Trip

Since both start in Labuan Bajo, Flores and Komodo pair perfectly. Add a Komodo boat trip before or after your overland adventure to see dragons, pink beaches and manta rays — browse our Komodo tours.

Practical Tips

The drives are long and winding, so bring motion-sickness remedies if you’re prone. Pace yourself, pack light for the Wae Rebo trek, and aim for the dry season (April–October) for the best roads and Kelimutu sunrises. For more, see our best time to visit Flores guide.
