A Sumatra jungle trek and Gunung Leuser Camp is a full-body adventure into one of the wildest rainforests on earth. You hike for hours through steamy, hilly jungle, sleep beside a river under the trees, and float back to the village by tube. It’s active, immersive and unforgettable. As a local Indonesian team that’s guided these treks since 2006, here’s exactly what to expect on a jungle trek in Gunung Leuser.
Planning the wider trip? Start with our Bukit Lawang orangutan trek guide.
Setting Off Into the Jungle
Your trek begins in Bukit Lawang, where you meet your guides and porters and step straight into Gunung Leuser National Park. Within minutes, the village fades and the rainforest closes in around you — towering trees, hanging vines, and a chorus of insects and birds. Your guides set the pace and read the forest, watching for movement in the canopy.
The Trekking Itself
Be ready to work for it. The trails are hilly, hot and humid, climbing and dropping through thick jungle. Some sections are steep and slippery, especially after rain. You’ll take regular breaks to drink, rest and watch wildlife, and your guides carry the heavy gear. It’s challenging but achievable for reasonably active travellers, and the sense of adventure is constant.
Finding the Orangutans
The highlight is, of course, the orangutans. Your guides know where these semi-wild apes are often seen, and the moment one appears in the trees above you is electric. You watch quietly, keeping a respectful distance — never feeding or touching them. Along the way you may also meet Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons and macaques.
Camping by the River
After a day’s trekking, you descend to a simple jungle camp beside a rushing river. There’s no luxury here, and that’s the point. Your guides cook a surprisingly good meal over the fire, you swim in the cool river to wash off the day, and you sleep under a basic shelter to the sound of rushing water and jungle nightlife. It’s rustic, communal and magical.
Tubing Back to the Village
The journey out is the most fun part. Instead of trekking all the way back, you float down the Bohorok River on inner tubes, riding the gentle rapids through the rainforest back to Bukit Lawang. It’s a joyful, splashy finish to the adventure, and a memory travellers talk about for years.
Is It Comfortable?
It’s basic but genuinely rewarding. You won’t have a soft bed or a hot shower in the jungle, but you’ll have something rarer: a night deep in a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest, with orangutans nearby. The guides’ skill and care make it safe and enjoyable. It suits adventurous travellers and families with older children.
A Few Practical Tips
- Wear trekking shoes with good grip — trails are slippery.
- Pack light in a dry bag; bring quick-dry clothes.
- Use strong insect repellent and bring a light rain layer.
- Carry a refillable water bottle and a hat.
- Listen to your guides — they keep you safe and find the wildlife.
