The Klotok Houseboat Experience: Sleeping in the Borneo Jungle
The klotok houseboat experience is the beating heart of any Tanjung Puting trip, and for many travellers it’s the highlight of their entire time in Indonesia. Imagine cruising a jungle river by day and falling asleep on deck under the stars, with the sounds of the rainforest all around. As a local Indonesian team that’s run these river trips since 2006, here’s exactly what life aboard a klotok is like.

What Is a Klotok Houseboat?
A klotok is a traditional wooden riverboat, named for the gentle “klotok-klotok” sound its engine makes as it chugs along. These boats have carried people and goods along Borneo’s rivers for generations. Today, they’re the perfect way to explore Tanjung Puting — slow, quiet and close to the water and the wildlife.
Life on Board
Klotoks come in different sizes, from small boats for a couple to larger ones for a group. Most have two levels. The lower deck holds the crew, the kitchen and the bathroom. The upper deck is yours — an open, shaded space where you spend your days.
By day, the upper deck is your lounge and dining room. You sit, watch the riverbanks slide past, and look out for orangutans and proboscis monkeys in the trees. Your crew — a captain, a guide and a cook — looks after everything.
Sleeping Under the Stars
At night, the magic happens. The crew transforms the upper deck into a comfortable bedroom, laying out mattresses with clean sheets, pillows and a mosquito net, all under the boat’s roof. You drift off to the chorus of the jungle — insects, frogs and the occasional call of a gibbon — with fireflies sparkling along the banks. It’s simple, safe and utterly unforgettable.
Better boats now also offer private cabins with air-conditioning and an ensuite bathroom, for those who’d like a little more comfort.
Eating on the River
One of the lovely surprises of a klotok trip is the food. Your onboard cook prepares fresh, generous Indonesian meals — rice, noodles, fresh fish, vegetables, tropical fruit and more — served on the deck as you cruise. Most travellers are amazed at how good the cooking is, given the tiny galley.
Is It Comfortable?
It’s basic but genuinely comfortable, and that’s the appeal. You won’t have a hotel room, but you’ll have something better: a private floating home drifting through one of the world’s great wildernesses. The crew’s care makes all the difference. For families and first-time adventurers, it’s an easy, gentle introduction to jungle travel.
A Few Practical Tips
- Pack light, in a soft bag — space is limited.
- Bring insect repellent, a light rain layer and a torch.
- Days are warm; bring sun protection and a hat.
- Leave the heavy electronics behind, but do bring a camera.
- The generator usually switches off at night for a peaceful sleep, so charge devices during the day.
