This Sumatra orangutans and elephants tour is a wildlife lover’s dream. Over six days you’ll trek into the jungle to find wild orangutans at Bukit Lawang, then journey to the hidden eco-village of Tangkahan to meet the conservation elephants of Gunung Leuser. It’s two of Sumatra’s greatest wildlife encounters in one private adventure.
Sumatra is one of only two places on earth where orangutans live in the wild, and its elephants are just as precious. As a local Indonesian operator since 2006, we arrange every detail, the eco-conscious way.
You meet two of Indonesia’s most iconic animals, responsibly. Trek through Gunung Leuser to find wild orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys and gibbons. Then travel to Tangkahan, a community-led conservation area, to walk with and bathe the patrol elephants that protect the forest. Swim in jungle rivers and soak in hot springs. We travel responsibly, supporting the conservation that protects these species — see the Orangutan Foundation International. Prefer trekking only? See our Bukit Lawang orangutan trek, or read our Bukit Lawang trek guide.
The first half is an active jungle trek with a night at a riverside camp. The second half is gentler and just as magical — a scenic drive to Tangkahan, time with the conservation elephants, and relaxing in rivers and hot springs. The pace eases as the trip unfolds. It’s a rich, responsible wildlife journey through North Sumatra.

Spend the day with the Conservation Response Unit elephants gentle giants that patrol and protect the forest. Walk alongside them and join their river bath, a respectful, conservation-focused encounter. Explore the jungle, swim in the river and soak in natural hot springs.
After a final morning in Tangkahan, transfer back to Medan for your onward flight. End of services.
