Working out how to get to Sulawesi is simpler than the island’s remote reputation suggests — a short flight to Makassar puts you at the gateway to Tana Toraja and the south. As a local Indonesian team that’s run Sulawesi trips since 2006, here’s our clear, practical guide.
Planning the wider trip? Start with our Sulawesi travel guide.
The Gateway: Makassar
Almost every South Sulawesi trip begins in Makassar, the island’s largest city and main southern hub. Its airport, Sultan Hasanuddin International (UPG), has good domestic connections and some international flights, making it the natural starting point.
Flights to Makassar
The easiest way in is a flight to Makassar. There are frequent direct flights from Bali (Denpasar), Jakarta and Surabaya, and connections from across Indonesia. Makassar also has some international links. We can advise on the best routing for your trip.
From Makassar to Tana Toraja
The cultural heart of Sulawesi, Tana Toraja, is reached overland from Makassar — a scenic drive of around eight hours through mountains, rice fields and villages. We break the journey with stops at highlights like the Maros karst and Lake Tempe, turning the drive itself into part of the adventure. A small airport near Toraja (Buntu Kunik) also has limited flights, which we can sometimes use to shorten the journey.
Travelling Around Sulawesi
Sulawesi is explored overland by private vehicle, on long but beautiful mountain roads. Public transport is slow and impractical for visitors, so a comfortable private car and driver make all the difference. We provide both, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
Do You Need to Arrange It Yourself?
You can travel independently, but coordinating flights, the long overland route, accommodation and cultural access takes real effort. Most travellers find it far easier to have a local operator handle the whole chain — airport pickup, private transport, guides and the full itinerary. That’s what we do.
Combining Sulawesi With Bali
Many travellers reach Sulawesi as part of a wider Indonesia trip, often via Bali. With a short flight from Denpasar to Makassar, Sulawesi pairs naturally with Bali or other islands — just tell us where else you’d like to go. Browse our Bali tours to combine them.
Let Us Handle the Logistics
The simplest way to reach and explore Sulawesi is to let a local team take care of the flights, transport and route.
Tell us your plans and we’ll arrange it all. Message us anytime on WhatsApp, or browse our Sulawesi tours. As always, we’re happy to share a local’s advice — whether you book with us or not.
