Working out how to get to Bukit Lawang is simpler than its jungle setting suggests — a flight to Medan and a scenic drive are all it takes to reach the edge of the rainforest. As a local Indonesian team that’s run Sumatra treks since 2006, here’s our clear, practical guide to reaching Bukit Lawang.
Planning the wider trip? Start with our Bukit Lawang orangutan trek guide.
The Gateway: Medan
Almost every Bukit Lawang trip begins in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra and the region’s main hub. Its airport, Kualanamu International (KNO), has good domestic connections and some international flights, making it the natural starting point.
Flights to Medan
You can reach Medan by direct flights from major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, and from regional hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From Bali, Lombok or elsewhere in Indonesia, you’ll usually connect through Jakarta. We can advise on the best routing for your trip.
From Medan to Bukit Lawang
From Kualanamu airport, it’s a scenic road journey of around three to four hours to Bukit Lawang. The drive winds through towns, rubber and palm plantations and rural Sumatra, giving you a real feel for the island before you reach the jungle. We arrange a private transfer, so you travel in comfort and don’t have to navigate local transport.
Timing Your Arrival
It’s best to arrive in Bukit Lawang by the afternoon or early evening, so you can settle into your guesthouse, meet your trekking guides and rest before the trek begins the next morning. If your flight lands late, we’ll plan the schedule around it. Most treks start after breakfast on the following day.
Do You Need to Arrange It Yourself?
You can travel independently, but coordinating flights, the long transfer and the trek permits takes effort, and public transport to Bukit Lawang is slow. Most travellers find it far easier and safer to have a local operator handle the whole chain — airport pickup, transfer, guesthouse and trek. That’s exactly what we do.
Combining Bukit Lawang With Your Trip
Sumatra pairs well with the rest of Indonesia, and Bukit Lawang combines beautifully with other North Sumatra highlights like Lake Toba, the vast volcanic lake a few hours away. You can also add it to a wider Indonesia journey. Just tell us where else you’d like to go.
Let Us Handle the Logistics
The simplest way to reach Bukit Lawang is to let a local team take care of the flights, transfer, permits and timing, so your adventure starts stress-free.
