Best Time to Visit Tanjung Puting: A Month-by-Month Guide
The best time to visit Tanjung Puting is the dry season, roughly April to October, when river cruising and jungle walks are at their most comfortable. But the truth is that this corner of Borneo rewards visitors year-round, and the orangutans are there in every season. As a local Indonesian team that’s run trips since 2006, here’s our honest guide to when to go, and what each season is really like.

Borneo Has Two Seasons
Tanjung Puting sits close to the equator, so it’s hot and humid all year — usually around 32°C by day and 20–25°C at night, with high humidity. There are two seasons, not four.
Dry season (around April to October). Less rain, easier walking and calmer river days. This is the most popular and comfortable time, and our general recommendation.
Wet season (around November to March). Greener and quieter, with short but heavy downpours rather than all-day rain. Mornings are often bright. It’s still a wonderful time to visit, and the jungle is at its most lush.
The Best Time to Visit Tanjung Puting Overall
If we had to choose, the sweet spot is the dry season, especially April to June and September to October. You get the most reliable weather and good wildlife viewing, without the very busiest crowds. The orangutans feed year-round, so sightings at the camps are reliable in any month.
A Note on Crowds
For most of the year, the park is peaceful — a handful of klotoks share the river. The exception is July and August, the peak season, when the camps and waterways are much busier. If you travel then, book well ahead, and arrive early at each camp to beat the crowds. The quieter shoulder months feel more intimate.
Wildlife Through the Year
The orangutans are present and feeding all year, so there’s no “bad” time to see them. The drier months can make the gentle jungle treks easier underfoot. Fruiting seasons vary, which can affect how often wild orangutans appear away from the camps, but the feeding stations make encounters dependable whenever you come. Proboscis monkeys, hornbills and fireflies are year-round companions along the river.
What to Pack for the Season
Whatever month you choose, pack light, breathable clothing, strong insect repellent and a light rain layer — tropical showers are always possible. In the wetter months, bring a proper waterproof and quick-dry clothes. A hat, sun protection and a good camera round out the essentials.
