Best Time to Visit Komodo: A Season-by-Season Guide
The best time to visit Komodo is the dry season, roughly April to October, when the seas are calmest, the water is clearest and the diving is at its best. But Komodo is a year-round destination, and the dragons are always there. As a local Indonesian team that’s run trips since 2006, here’s our honest season-by-season guide.
Planning the wider trip? Start with our Komodo travel guide.
Komodo Has Two Seasons
Komodo is hot and dry compared to much of Indonesia, with rugged, savannah-covered islands. There are two seasons.
Dry season (around April to October). Calm seas, clear skies and excellent visibility underwater. This is the best and most popular time for boat trips, snorkelling and diving.
Wet season (around November to March). Rougher seas and occasional storms, but lush green islands and far fewer visitors. Boat trips still run, though rough days can affect schedules.
The Best Time to Visit Komodo Overall
For the best all-round experience, aim for May to September. The seas are calm for boat trips, the water is clear for snorkelling and diving, and Padar’s hikes are dry underfoot. June to August is peak season — spectacular, but busier and pricier, so book ahead.
Best Time for Diving & Manta Rays
Komodo is one of the world’s great dive destinations. The dry season offers the best visibility overall. Manta rays can be seen year-round at Manta Point, with especially good encounters in the wet season when plankton is abundant — a trade-off worth knowing if mantas are your priority.
When Are the Dragons Active?
Komodo dragons are visible all year. They tend to be most active in the cooler parts of the day, so morning walks are ideal. The dry season can make them easier to spot as they bask in open areas.
Avoiding the Crowds
To enjoy the famous spots like Padar Island with fewer people, travel in the shoulder months of April–May or September–October, and start early. An early start also means the best light for photography and cooler hiking.
What to Pack
Bring sun protection, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, good shoes for the Padar hike, and a dry bag for the boat. A light layer is handy for breezy evenings on deck.
