Best Time to Visit Flores: A Season-by-Season Guide

The best time to visit Flores is the dry season, roughly April to October, when the roads are easiest, the trekking is most comfortable, and Kelimutu’s sunrises are at their clearest. But Flores has its own rhythm, and understanding the seasons helps you plan well. As a local Indonesian team that’s run trips since 2006, here’s our honest guide.

Flores Has Two Seasons

Flores is warm and tropical year-round, typically 26–32°C. There are two seasons.

Dry season (around April to October). Less rain, firmer roads and clearer skies. This is the best and most popular time for overland travel, trekking and Kelimutu sunrises.

Wet season (around November to March). Greener and quieter, but with heavier rain that can make the mountain roads harder and landslides more likely. Kelimutu is often cloudy at dawn.

The Best Time to Visit Flores Overall

For the easiest journey and the best chance of a clear Kelimutu sunrise, aim for May to September. The roads are at their best, the highland air is pleasant, and the views are sharp. June to August is peak season, busier and pricier, so book ahead.

Why the Season Matters Here

Flores is more weather-sensitive than a beach destination. Its appeal is overland — winding mountain roads, treks and sunrise views — all of which are far better in the dry months. In heavy rain, roads can be slow or blocked, and the famous Kelimutu colours are hidden by cloud. So the season genuinely shapes the experience.

Wildlife, Culture & Festivals

Flores’s villages and culture are rewarding year-round. The dry season aligns with more local ceremonies and easier village access. If you hope to see a Caci dance or visit remote villages like Wae Rebo, the dry months make it simpler.

Combining With Komodo

If you’re pairing Flores with Komodo, the dry season also suits the islands — calmer seas for boat trips and clearer water for snorkelling. It’s the ideal window for the full Flores-and-Komodo adventure. Browse our Komodo tours.

What to Pack

Bring layers for cool highland mornings, a light rain jacket any time, good shoes for the Wae Rebo trek, and motion-sickness remedies for the winding roads. A warm layer is worth it for the chilly pre-dawn Kelimutu summit.
