The best time to visit Bukit Lawang is the dry season, roughly March to September, when the jungle trails are firmest and trekking is most comfortable. But Sumatra’s rainforest is rewarding year-round, and the orangutans are always there. As a local Indonesian team that’s run treks since 2006, here’s our honest guide to choosing your season.

Sumatra Has Two Seasons
Bukit Lawang sits in tropical rainforest, so it’s warm and humid all year, usually around 28–32°C. There are two broad seasons, though it can rain in any month — it is a rainforest, after all.
Dry season (around March to September). Less rain, firmer trails and easier trekking. This is the best and most popular time to visit. The driest months are often around May to September.
Wet season (around October to February). Heavier, more frequent rain, lush green jungle and fewer visitors. Trails get muddy and slippery, and river levels rise, so treks may be shortened for safety.
The Best Time to Visit Bukit Lawang Overall
For the easiest trekking and the most reliable weather, aim for the dry months of May to September. The forest is still humid and the odd shower is normal, but the trails are at their best and the jungle camps are most comfortable.
A Note on Crowds
Bukit Lawang is far quieter than Bali, but the European summer (July–August) is its busiest spell. If you trek then, book ahead. The shoulder months of March–April and September are a lovely balance of good weather and thinner crowds.
Wildlife Through the Year
The semi-wild orangutans of Bukit Lawang are present in every season, so sightings are possible year-round. Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons, macaques and hornbills are active all year too. In the wet season the forest is at its most vivid and green, though heavy rain can make longer treks harder.
Safety in the Wet Season
One honest word of caution: in the heavy rains, river levels can rise quickly. Reputable guides monitor conditions closely and will adjust or shorten treks and river crossings for safety. Always trek with experienced local guides, which is how we run every trip.
What to Pack for the Season
Year-round, bring trekking shoes with grip, quick-dry clothes, strong insect repellent and a light rain layer. In the wetter months, add a proper waterproof and pack everything in a dry bag.
