Toraja The Land Of Heavenly Kings

Tana Toraja is one of the beautiful region in Indonesia includes their unique culture and traditions, Toraja are etnic group indegineous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi.

Believing that their forefathers descended from heaven in a boat some twenty generations ago, the Torajans have a unique Christian animist culture .the majority of the people still follow an ancestral cult called “Aluk Todolo”, which governs all traditional ceremonies. Their ancestor worship includes elaborate death and after life ceremonies, which are essentially great feasts. A strict social hierarchy is followed in the villages, and for an important figure wedding and burial ceremonies can take days to perform. Water buffalo and pigs are sacrificed in numbers appropriate to social rank, and the deceased’s remains are placed in a coffin and interred in caves hollowed out in high cliffs. The mouth of the cave is guarded by lifelike statues, called Tau Tau, who look out from a balcony near the burial caves, watching over the families and friends they have left behind.

Trip Itinerary

Day 01: Makassar – Toraja ( L/D )

You will get pick up in Makassar Airport/Hotel and we will start our journey to Toraja. Along the way we will visit Rammang – Rammang, where we will ride small boat on the Pute River. Here you can see amazing view of Karst stone that split by the river. We can also walk around the amazing paddy fields and visit the local village around this area. Lunch will be served in Pare – Pare, a small harbour town with warm atmosphere and amazing view. Later arrive in the evening in Toraja, check in to the hotel and dinner at the hotel. Then free program.

Day 02: Full Day Toraja Tour (B/L/D)

We will take you for a full day excursion in South Toraja, tour will start at 9:00am. First we will visit Lemo to see Tau-Tau and hanging graves. Then continue to Sangalla area to visit the royal graves from Sangalla Kingdom and then we will visit the baby tree-graves in Kambira. Before we leave Sangalla, we will stop to visit natural cave that locals use as burial place in Tampang Allo. Next we will visit the famous Toraja funeral ceremonies*. And in the afternoon we will visit Londa, a mystical area full with culture and history. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant located in the middle of rice field. Return back to hotel at around 4:30pm. Then at 7:00pm, meeting with guide for dinner in local restaurant in Rantepao.

Day 03: Full Day Toraja Tour (B/L/D)

We will take you for a full day excursion in North Toraja, tour will start at 9:00am. First we will visit Kete Kesu, a traditional Torajan village surrounded by rice field that famous for its wood crafting. From here we will visit Bolu Maket where you will find iconic animals such as Torajan White Buffalo, Torajan Pigs and also well-known locak produces such as Torajan coffee, Lada Kattokon (Toraja Chili) and many more. Then continue to Lo’ko’ Mata a huge square-shape rock that local use as burial place then short trekking to Battutumonga. Along the way you will see beautiful view of rice field, mountains and local villages. We will arrive in Battutumonga where lunch will be served while enjoying the view of Rantepao city and other surrounding areas. From here we will visit Bori, an ancient site full with megalith stones and commonly use as buffalos sacrifice area. After Bori we will stop at Rantepao market as the centre of Toraja souvenirs. In here you can find many souvenirs to bring home from goods such as traditional music instruments from bamboo, all size and shape of Toraja wood crafting, authentic Toraja garment and many more. Return back to hotel at around 4:30pm. Later dinner at the hotel.

Day 04: Toraja – Makassar ( B/L )

Morning call about 4:30am, then drive you to Tongkonan Lempe to watch sunrise on a cloud country, Enjoy the scenery havinga cup of Tea / coffee with fried banana. about 7am drive back to hotel preparation for departure. We will depart from hotel in the morning at about 9:00am onto Makassar city. Along the way we will stop in Bambapuang for coffee/tea break while enjoying the breathtaking view of mountains. Next we will have lunch in Pare-Pare. After lunch we will visit traditional fisherman port where you can see how the locals process their catch that was catch using Phinisi boats. Next, we will visit Buginese houses in Pangkep. In the evening arrive in Makassar drop to the Makassar airport to catch evening flight or to hotel in Makassar for overnight stay.
